Abstract: Public avalanche warning services (AWS') play a crucial role in assessing and communicating the hazard of snow avalanches. The core product of AWS' is the avalanche bulletin, which presents information on the current or future avalanche hazard in a structured manner. Existing workflows and systems in public avalanche forecasting in Europe are focused on setting common standards for communicating the information compiled in the daily bulletin. However, there is a lack of guidance and support in the hazard assessment process leading up to it, resulting in the potential loss of information during the course of a winter season and a limited base for information exchange among professionals. This leads to inconsistencies and compromised forecasting accuracy. This paper aims at addressing this deficiency by proposing an adapted workflow and system based on already existing standards, which allows for the temporal and spatial tracking, assessment and documentation of snowpack instabilities.
