Abstract: In recent years different remote sensing techniques have been proved to be very useful for snow measurement and monitoring in alpine environments. Terrestrial Laser Scanner has been tested in different environments and conditions and presented a remarkable performance and accuracy to measure spatial and temporal distribution of snow depth at different scales and levels of precision. Recently, dronebased solutions mainly based on photogrammetry have been tested with less accuracy and resolution but showing great a potential of improvement and development. In parallel recent research has been conducted in the application and usefulness of different remote sensing techniques for snow monitoring in ski resorts. This study presents the first findings of using Terrestrial Laser Scanner and on-board drone LIDAR technologies to measure and monitor the snow depth distribution and explore the potential applications of these techniques to help in the decision-making of slopes and avalanche risk management in ski resorts.
