Summary of Methods: Crawley notes that there has been a resurgence of the density dependence debate (TREE Letters, March 1987), and the argument about whether or not competition is important in structuring communities (TREE Letters, November 1986). One of the more peculiar of the long running disputes has also recently returned to the limelight. This concerns the question of whether or not herbivory is good for plants. Crawley reviewed the various literature on the subjects and concludes that there is not enough long-term, manipulative field experiments to draw upon for conclusive results.
