Summary of Methods: Whitford et al. concluded that desert ant species are poor indicators of chronic stress and ecosystem disturbance. Cattle grazing and herbicide application showed little, if any, negative impact on ant species composition and overall numbers. Whitford et al. also concluded that desert ants are remarkably resistant to such environmental stressors, since they commonly occur in the habitat where the ants reside.
